I need to acquire a full 5.1 speaker system. I have read good things about the QS8s and am considering going with them. However, I am thinking about using another brand for my fronts and sub. Has anyone built similiar setup? Were you pleased with the results? Any potential issues that I need to be aware of?

A few years back while building up my Axiom speaker system, I managed to find myself with all Axioms across the front and some "brand X" direct radiating speakers as surrounds. While the X models had poly woofers and mylar tweeters VS the aluminum and titanium of the Axioms, the sound didn't come out all that bad!! You could tell the transitions from front to back weren't seamless, but if one didn't dwell upon it....!

.......ok, a Cessna single flying in from the back turned into a DC-3 when it got to the front, but that was an extreme example!

Troy, while you should be fine with the mix as long as all the fronts match, I had an Aperion and Axiom mix also, and while the Aperions are good sounding speakers, Imho they really don't sound near as good as the Axioms, the Aperions are now a 3 channel in the bedroom. You should be fine with any type of sub though.

A DC-3?

Wow.

That WAS a few years back, huh?

Interesting!! I just noticed that the Aperion bookshelf model is very close to the "Brand X" speakers I was using that I commented on earlier!

I call them "brand X" just for giggles, they really aren't bad speakers. But I noticed that the componentry is very much the same!

They don't sound much like the Axioms at all, and it leads me to wonder what kind of sound it is that you have in mind?

The Axioms are likely to be quite a bit more to the foreward side of the spectrum and perhaps a bit livelier than the Aperions. While the Aperions are possibly more to the warm side and less accurate in their presentation. I'm only guessing here, but it could be a consideration, as the QS8s will more closely match the Axiom overall sonic characteristics and might be a point of contention each time a rousing action flick pops on TV!

If the QS8s are the starting point for a system and the sonic signature is oriented toward Axiom, then the Axiom front speakers would also be worty of consideration!

.......ain't THAT stating the obvious!!

Subs are another matter and a topic upon themselves!!

Happy Hunting!
Rich.

I use my QS8's with Quad 22L's and Centre and enjoy them very much. I think the QS8's are the best speaker in the Axiom line-up.

From what I have read, matching the rears or rear surrounds with the fronts and center is not especially critical. I had the JBL SAT20s for rears before I bought the QS8s. The biggest difference that I noticed was the better sound dispersion with the QS8s.
