Ok guys, I have my Outlaw sub comming in a few days so I was just messing around with the receiver settings to get it ready for when the sub arrives.

Anyway, I have had my mains set to "large". I switched the setting to "small" and set the crossover at 80Hz. In doing so, the mains now have a slightly different sound to them. I would go as far as to say they are more harsh sounding now with the setting at "small".

I got the following quote from ecoustics:

"One reason for using the "small" setting is that when you relieve a speaker of low bass duties, that speaker becomes a much easier load for your amp, and the midrange quality of the speaker often improves."

So is this "harsh" sound I feel like im hearing simply a result of more midrange? Maybe im used to a more "warm" sound with the speakers set to "large"?

Can someone please set me straight. Thanks

I always have my 60's set to small with a 80hz crossover and have never heard what your describing. The bass is still killer at that setting, and the midrange frequencies are much higher than 80hz, so they would not play a part in your change. Even if I turn my sub off, they still sound good as most music/CD's don't go that low anyway.

Dude, I think your reading to many articles or maybe your receiver settings are messed up. If your using Room EQ on your AVR if it has it, turn it off.

Are you setting to "small" but without a sub ? If so, I notice pretty much the same thing. I don't think it's really a different sound though -- when the bass is stripped away it seems like you hear more of everything else, and it does sound harsh at first.

Now you know what M2s sound like

Well im not sure one can ever learn too much. My receiver settings are fine. If you turn your sub off and set your receiver to 2 channel stereo mode, then go in and switch between the large and small setting you will see what im saying. The large setting has a slightly more warm sound to it. The small setting seems slightly more clear and crisp and even a little harsh to someone that is used to the warmer sound. The difference is small but it is there.

Yes, my sub isnt here yet so I was kinda just messing around with the receiver.

But ya, I can see what your saying. The bass from the sub (once it gets here) will kinda mellow it out a bit.

Jay, if in fact you were able to set the mains "small" without a sub(most receivers don't permit this), then the low bass was almost totally lost, as was said, and that's what you're hearing.

I think your correct John, If you set your mains to small, the AVR will assume you have a sub and ask for crossover, etc. settings. If there is no sub in the equation, I don't think the AVR will allow this setting, at least I don't think my Denon will.
