Ok, I know some people place their surrounds to the sides of the listening area and some behind. Mine are behind at 45 degree angle to my listening area and sound great. Question is for those who have put them both ways, which way do you prefer and why?

Al, if you're speaking of the side surrounds in a 5.1(not 7.1)setup, it's generally best to have them a little farther back(maybe 2'; not quite as much as your 45 degree positioning)from being directly to the side. Since there aren't any back surround speakers this positioning helps create a little back surround effect by forming a "phantom" back speaker when there's material about equally loud in both side surrounds.
If the setup is 7.1 the side surrounds should be directly to the sides and the back surrounds spread about the same distance as they're behind the listening position.
