Hello, I am trying to decide which set of 5.1 speakers I would like to buy for my family room. I have pretty much decided on the qs4s for the rear because my wife likes the way they look and I have only read positive things about them. My left, and right speakers will need to be placed on their sides to fit in a bookshelf that is part of a built in entertainment center. I realize this is not the best way to position a speaker but I only have 8" of height to work with and about 40" of width, the depth is 18". Will the Axioms still sound good positioned on their sides? Would a front ported speaker or a different brand work better for my setup? I was also considering using 3 vp100's or 3 other speakers designed to be a center channel since they would be oriented correctly. Please give me any suggestions that you have. Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim and welcome!
Well, if ya gotta; just gotta put some speakers in a bookshelf and they have to be on their sides, well....it will work, but not sound their best.
During the holidays(ok guys...the Christmas holidays)I routinely place my center channel M3 on its' side to help the Wife in her decorating. Actually the sucker works just fine and I can't say as I notice much, if any, difference!
A bookshelf is a bad deal, I know cause that's the situation I'm in. But sometimes we get stuck doing the not so right thing. Yeah; 18in. depth will give M2s, M3s or even M22s ample breathing room. Rich.
That's right! I remember now!! Before we moved into this house, my system consisted of three M3s across the front. They sounded GREAT! I'm still using that same M3 as center, with my M50s as mains!

Thank you for the quick response. I would also like to note that I was able to listen to a pair of Energy RC-10's in a local store and was very impressed with the sound. Can anyone comment on how the Axiom setup would compare to Energy? I do not think that I will be able to find anyone with Axioms in my area to try them out ahead of time to do a comparison.

Have you checked the audition thread, where do you live? Also, if you use the search utility and look for "energy" in the subject line, there have been some discussions in the past. I think overall, Axioms make a better speaker and for the money are hard to beat. I also agree that it is not a good idea to turn your speakers on their sides, but if you don't have any other options, I'm sure it would work. Normally, you don't want to place speakers in an enclosure, then need to breath.

I live in Dubuque, Iowa. What speakers would you recommend, the m22 or the m2? My room is around 1800 cubic feet. I will be using a sub. Thanks

Hey Tim, it would be cool to have another Iowan onboard, we need to surpass those Illinois Axiomites. Actualy, there are more Iowa folks then the 3 on the audition thread, but I'm not sure if any of them are near Dubuque. I have not heard the 2's, 3's, or 22's. Others should chime in with advice, but I think they all are great speakers. I've heard the 22's combined with a sub do a fabulous job. Any chance you have a picture/drawing of the room you could share so we know what your up against. You can use photobucket online which is a free place to host your pictures and then show them on any forum. Also, what type of TV are you using and how do you plan to incorporate a center speaker? Talk to you later, Randy
