Denon receiver changes DVD aspect ratio?

This is probably a hideously stupid question, but I cannot figure it out.
Got a new to me Denon receiver today, AVR-787. I want to run/switch my video sources through the receiver so that I don't have to switch inputs on my tv when changing source. The connections are simple enough, multiple component video inputs and one set of component video out to the tv. (No HDMI on my set.)
My Dish Network PVR works perfectly, I get a 4:3 picture with bars on the sides for SD signals, and 16:9 for HD signals. My DVD, however, always is displayed at 4:3. I've checked every setting, and can't figure it out. So then thinking the problem is with the DVD player itself, I connected it directly to the tv without going through the receiver first, and the picture displays properly as 16:9.
Any advice?

I have a denon 1906, which is the same as a 786, last year's model of your reciever. As I understand it, the denon doesn't do any scaling or processing of the video signal, it just passes it through component. I only have a 480p widescreen projector though, so I never have any HD signals through the denon. No matter what signal I feed my projector (through the denon) it fits as expected. 4:3 black bars on the sides, 16:9 fills frame, and DVD 2.35:1 black bar top and bottom.
I would check to see if your TV is doing any scaling of itself to the signal. Also, check to see if your DVD player is upconverting to a HD signal. If the HD from the dish reciever works, just get the DVD player to also output HD.

Check the settings on your DVD Player and TV. They should be set to "full". The Denon is doing any scaling.

Strange. I agree with Ray- check the settings in both the DVD and TV. The receiver "shouldn't" be mucking with the video. There are usually 2 settings... 1) how it handles 4:3 material (Full or Normal), and 2) Your display size (4:3 or 16:9).

Well, the DVD is set to 16:9 and the TV is set to "Normal", which means it displays the signal as received. I can change the TV setting to "Full", but that causes it to stretch any 4:3 material presented.
The DVDs being played are 16:9 format. I am so stumped.
