Those are movies I have not experienced at the PorterPlex. If you decide to stop by some time we could check out the action with m80s and the ep600. It would be interesting to see your impressions after hearing Nicks setup. Bring that music also.

Sounds like you both had a good time. I am a little late on this, but I like doing Demos because it gives me a chance to really let my system shine and I get to enjoy it the way I want to, No kids(well not in the room anyway), no wife(still kid related, as my wife likes the system as I do, just not as loud), no distractions, just concentrating on showing off the speakers. I have way to much fun . I was very disappointed I missed my last audition that my wife ended up doing for me, I do love her so!

As far as I can remember the babarian war scene at the beginning of Gladiator sounds a lot better in DTS than in Dolby Digital. Whenever I has changed from one to the other I could hear the arrows whizz over my head (that was with an old HTIB so maybe as mentioned that was due to the surrounds being too loud).

I used the DTS version in when we did the demo...

Then I guess it was my old HTIB fooling me into thinking the surround was great by just being louder than it should have been. .

For whatever reason, the opening battle scene in Gladiator has never impressed me much from a demo-your-system standpoint. Visually it's stunning, and I quite enjoy the movie as a whole. There's just not that much sonic impact to that first scene in either DD or DTS. The whole scene has always seemed sonically rather drab or muffled, IMHO, even though it could be magnificent. I almost feel like the sound levels were mastered so high that you lose the detail to sheer volume. I'm not an expert, it's just what I think. Better 'battle' scenes that I like to demo would include : - The opening skirmish in 'Master & Commander'. My current top pick to demo a system because of the amazing surround mix that really feels like you're on the HMS Surprise, and for cannon fire that will absolutely test your subs resolve.
- The sieges of Jerusalem in 'Kingdom of Heaven'
- Just about every battle in the LOTR trilogy
- The often-mentioned beach scene in 'Saving Private Ryan', also the scene near the end with the tank is pretty amazing too
- Many parts of the most excellent 'Band of Brothers' series
- The main battle in 'Braveheart', with the English heavy horse
- The opening starship battle with the Borg in 'Star Trek: First Contact' is pretty well done, if you're a trekkie
- The obligatory space battles from episodes 2 and 3 of Star Wars

I usually bring up the pod race from episode one. The pods are all around you almost all the time.

I skipped the pod race on purpose. I've seen that a bazillion times when people want to show off their stuff. ARGH!

yes but you can't argue how good the surround effects are, that and I have a limited in house movie supply.
The original Pirates of the Carribbean(SP? Its late) has some pretty good effects as well. The scene where the town is getting attacked, lots of cannon fire going front to back and left right.

For good surround effects, try when Doc Oct escapes from the hospital in Spiderman 2. But if you really want good surround effects get some multichannel music. Porcupine Tree: Deadwing and Blue Man Group: The Complex spring to mind.
