Hi, I have a yamaha Receiver which sets a global crossover at 40/50/60/70/80/90/100/110.. and I am thinking of the following system: Tower Speakers M80 ( 25 to 22K) Surrounds QS8 ( 95 to ..) Centers VP150 (85 to..) Subwoofer EP350
Normally I would set the crossover at 80 and things would be fine. In this case it seems I would have to set crossover at 100 to accomodate QS8 & VP150. Would I not be wasting capabilities of M80s if I did so ?
Thanks
sst

If you set the 80's to "large" in the receiver setup, they will received the full range of anthing below your crossover point, as will the sub.
You would be better off setting all speakers to small, with a global crossover of 80hz, so your sub receives everything that is sloped off below 80hz.

I understand what you're saying. If you set the x-over to 80, that leaves a 15Hz hole for the QS8s and a 5Hz hole for the VP150. But if you set it to 100, now you feel that you are wasting the full-size capability of the M80s.
In my room, I have found that 80Hz works best for movies and 60Hz works best for music. 100 sounds too "boomy" and is sometimes localizable. In practice, I am not missing anything in the content because the speakers' sound pressure levels in room are lower than in an anechoic chamber (ie. Axiom's published figures). As a matter of fact (and I think I may have posted this before), I get bass out of the QS8s down to 60Hz before the response starts dropping off. And I know that the VP150 goes lower too although I don't recall what the number is.
Your room of course could be different. If you want to know for sure, download the test tones from the RealTraps site, pull out your SPL meter and measure.

I had the same concern and tried it (at 80hz). There is no gap in my room either for QS-8 or VP-150. I have no sub-woofer at present time (should get an EP-500 within the next 2-3 weeks to replace an awful Kenwood one) and I redirect the LFE channels to my M-80 and, apart from movie effects, the M-80 have such deep and powerful bass that I am not even missing it too much (especially the cheap Kenwood one)!

So far, I am replacing my old stuff one piece a month (VP-150, then QS-8, then M-80 and finaly, the last missing piece, the EP-500). At each step, I keep raising my expections and they get exceeded. So, logically, the EP-500 should really blow me away (actually, is it powerful enough to blow-dry your hair in the morning? that would a huge time saver ). Can't wait!

Thanks a lot for responses. I guess it is not that big a deal to set it up at 80 hz.
