I can get this subwoofer for about 500. Does anyone know how it compares with the comparable SVS and HSU subs. I've seen some nice reviews of the sub. I'd be using it with the m60's.

I had a PSB 6i for a couple of years and was quite happy with it. Eventually I gave in and bought an SVS PC+ 20-39. I thought the SVS was about the same for music but went considerably deeper for movie soundtracks.

I haven't had a chance to do any kind of serious comparison between lots of subs in the same room, but based on specs and anecdotal experience I would put the 6i on the same level as a HSU STF-3 or the smaller 12" SVS box sub (don't remember the part number).

SVS may have dropped the "normal size" box sub (PB-ISD, I think) in favour of the new NSD, which IIRC has a larger cabinet and would probably be better for movies if not quite as good for music.

What kind of music / movie mix are you thinking about ? Actually, depending on the music you listen to, maybe it doesn't matter 'cause I still prefer listening to music on my M60s *without* a sub so I'm gonna guess that you are looking mostly for movies.

If you are mostly looking for a movie sub, IMO $500 might be a bit high for the 6i - not because it's a bad sub at all but because there have been a lot of improvements in movie subs over the last couple of years.

I didn't realize the 6i is an older model. Are you talking about the 6 or the 6i. Actually I plan on using a dual sub system, an older velodyne and whatever new sub I get. My primary need out of a sub is to strenthen the mid bass with the m60's. Those bass guitars and cello just don't sound as tight as I'd like. With my Velodyne I get all the thunder I need for movies. It's really the music end I want to improve.

Eddie, one comment I'll make is to keep in mind that any "tightness" of instruments whose fundamental lies in the mid-bass area(e.g. 50-100Hz)is determined primarily by upper harmonics which are played by the speakers, not the sub.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

What do you have your crossover set at? The mid bass is pretty tight on the M60s. Could be the recordings are not quite up to the Axiom challenge.

I bought the 6i new about four years ago, I think. Something like that anyways.

How far do you have the 60s from the back wall ? You can kinda fine-tune the mid-bass a bit by changing the distance from the wall.

I have the speakers about 12 inches from the back wall raise up on speaker spikes and toed in a bit. The sound stage is fantastic, and just about everything else but the mid bass.

I think someone around here may suggest you try scooting them a little closer to the wall.... see if that effects the bass output at all.
