At those prices they got them at, we all up here should have had them buy one for us. The shipping and duty is still way cheaper than the $250 they are selling them for up here.

They'll be selling for $50 up here pretty soon.

You wish Some may not agree, but I think Toshiba is doing an excellent job of continuing to upgrade and improve their new and existing models with updates to conform to the rapidly changing HD environment. So what if I have to update the player every so often, it certainly beats a player that you can't update that becomes useless within 6 months.

it certainly beats a player that you can't update that becomes useless within 6 months. But isn't that the point. They shouldn't be releasing things until the standard is, well, standard and not changing. The whole high def thing has been in a constant state of flux(insert Back to the Future quip here) since its inception and neither party should have released anything till they had a stable product. As Brotherbob said not everyone is computer literate that is into HT and these updates are not in their best interests meaning they have a new piece of equipment that is useless because they are not comfortable or don't know how to do these 'easy updates'.

I agree wholeheartedly with updates/upgrades. But I expect it to work as advertised out of the box.

Now you're just being unrealistic in the constantly changing realm of HD. An upgrade right out of the box appears to be the new norm.

UPDATE: I originally had been using the burnatonce software that was recommended and downloading from the U.S. site with no success whatsoever. I've deleted burnatonce and all of the downloaded files and am taking it from the beginning with ActiveISO burner and the file from the Canadian site. Knock on wood, it's one past the first two minutes and I haven't gotten the error code that I was getting my previous 12 attempts. Keep your fingers crossed! Jack, thank you so much for the offer! What's frustrating is that I kept feeling like "I should be getting this…it's not that complicated". I was starting to think that I must have a faulty player. UPDATE to the UPDATE: After only 5-7 minutes, I turned around and the player was powered off. My initial concern of another failure was replaced with: "Hey…didn't I read that this is how the update finishes?" Sure enough, I checked the firmware version, and it's 2.5!!! This time was so easy! Let me pass on Jack's offer …. Pay it forward: I used the Active ISO software.exe downloaded to burn the file from the Toshiba Canada site and it worked perfectly for the first and only time. If anyone would like a copy of MY disc, PM me your address. I can duplicate and distribute for anyone.

Homedad, I did try component, and it looked awesome. When I cycled back/forth from component to HDMI, I thought the component looked better. Granted, I calibrated my component signal with my new AVIA and have not calibrated the HDMI/DVI input. The bad thing is you can't use regular DVD's via the component signal, they don't get upconverted. This was part of the reason I purchased the player. I also thought the sound was awesome, lots of action from my surround and rear qs8's. Lorenzo, if your serious let me know, maybe we can figure something out. It has the latest 2.5 firmware. Randy

Randy,
Are you saying that this DVD player is somehow giving you better "action" from your surrounds than your old one?

OK, now I feel bad. I would like to say that it was Oppo, and not me, that recommended BaO. I have not, in fact, ever used it (as I use Alcohol as stated) and indeed, don't even have an Oppo yet. I merely saw that bit with the instructions on their website as I was researching for a SACD player. My apologies to anyone who made extra coasters based on my post. I hear they can do cool things in a microwave.
