Hi Everyone,

Although I've owned just a pair of M80's for quite sometime now I'm new to the forum. I bought these speakers back in college and now that out in the working force I own my own house and would like to get some surrounds and the center to complete the package. I've decided on the QS4's and the VP100 for budget and room size reasons. My subwoofer is a 12" woofer in a home made 2'x2'x3' box (I use it as an end table now . I ran all the wiring for for the sub and the surrounds in my back walls last night. My couch will be right up against the rear wall so the surrounds will be to the sides. I'm just trying to figure out how i want to mount them. I run the wires up into a gangbox and put a speaker terminal plate against the wall which sticks out about 1/2". I'd like to mount the T brackets to the studs right next to the plates so that when the speakers are hung they will hang over the plates. My only concern is how much clearance will be behind the speaker when it is hung. Does anyone know the answer to this? I suppose I could always remove the plates and just run the bare wires to the back of the speaker, but I'd like to leave them on if possible. Any thoughts?

You will need to hook up the speakers with bare wire, there is no room for banana plugs. They sit pretttty flush with the wall, at most a couple of cm's away from the wall.

You don't really need a gangbox, you can just run the wire up beside the stud through a small hole, and the speaker will cover it up, works great!

Yeah, I already put the gangbox in, I'm sure the speakers will cover those too...they're 9 inches wide, I'll mount them such that they conceal the gangboxes...thanks for your input. My other option is to get the mounting brackets and just leave terminal plates on the walls. I decided on the gangboxes mostly because I wanted a big enough to hole to reach my hand into when I was fish the wires up from my basement....which actually wasn't that hard. I didn't have to cut any large sections of drywall outta the wall like I thought I would have to do.

I've got a pair of QS8s on the way. When installing the T-Bracket, do I need to secure them into a wall stud or will drywall anchors do the trick?

Jordan, preferably you want to find the studs, but if placement issues come up you can use drywall anchors. I recently installed my QS8s using molly bolts and they feel very secure.

I moved mine out of what I felt was the optimum location because there was no stud there. Secured them in studs and I feel better about things.

I didn't want to come home and find a busted QS8 on the floor in a mess of drywall

I had visions of that, too.

I've got placement issues as I am in an apartment currently where the studs are metal, as opposed to the wood ones that I am used to. I have no idea how to secure into them, or even locate them with my stud finder.

If you go to the hardware store, check and see if they have a lb. rating. You definitely don't want to get "just enough."

If your in an apartment, maybe look at using a toggle bolt. Although they usually require a larger hole, they are removable, except for the toggle part (that'll fall inside the wall) and may make patch jobs easier.

Molly bolts are more of a permanent solution. To make them go away you have to pound them further into the wall and then cover the metal with spackle. There probably is another way to remove them, but I'm not sure.

I used regular screws without anchors (for my QS8's). Perhaps I was going into wood, I don't know, but with the 7 screws....everything was very secure, I was quite surprised.

I mounted our four QS8's using the Axiom supplied T-brackets affixed to the drywall using the pictured 30# white nylon E-Z Anchors and ran bare 12 ga. speaker wire to each speaker. I found some recessed wall plates from Parts Unlimited but chucked that idea in favor of the easy way out. I wouldn't hesitate one bit to recommend the use of the E-Z Anchors on drywall without the use of a stud, they'll hold a ton.

I had the two mixed up. I have some extra molly bolts kicking around but didn't want to use them for the exact reason you specified. Toggle bolts it is. I'll be sure to check the weight rating of them. I'll also look into the E-Z Anchors as well.

Many thanks guys. I'm really stoked to get a hold of the QS8s. The only thing left now speaker-wise is a sub, which will likely have to wait until I get out of the apartment.

I'm continually amazed at how much weight the EZ-anchors will take in drywall, and they are removable. If you use every available screw hole with these things to distribute the weight, it won't come out unless you decide to hang off them.

I dislike the mess a toggle home makes but they will definately hold more weight.
