I tried to describe this room last week in words and nobody really understood what I was talking about. So, now I have a link to a CAD drawing: http://www.math.msu.edu/~borosnic/roomdesign.pdf

The 14' by 15' room with the extended bay cutout is the room in question. The room would have an 8' ceiling. My dad is planning on building this room for a theater room. Due to his other plans for the basement he is hoping that this design will work. However, if I can convince him that the acoustics would be terrible then he may be able to choose a different sized room that would be better.

Is this room going to cause big problems for acoustics? What would the problems be?

thanks in advance for any replies, Nick

I almost forgot. He is planning on putting a projection TV on the wall with the arrow pointing at it. So that is the wall the front speakers would go on. In the bay cutout he wants to put a large wraparound desk to use as study area.

I thought I remember someone having a room similar to this one who wanted to know about room acoustics for his room. I couldn't find it when I tried to search for it though. Does anybody remember who it was or what people said about the room acoustics?

Here is a good read that will help you understand room acoustics.

http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

Larger rooms will have less of an issue with peaks/dips in frequency response, than smaller rooms.

Also room dimensions play a role:

A perfect cube where all dimensions are the same is the worse scenario. (12ft x 12ft x 12ft)

A room with dimensions divisable by each other is also not great. (ex. 10ft x 15ft x 30ft)

An ideal room would be larger with dimensions like 12ft x 28ft x 9ft)

Thanks for the link. It seems that this may be the only help that I can get, since this is a difficult question to answer. I'll have to read this in more depth this weekend.
