Has anyone watched this? If so, what did you think?

The wife and I watched it last night, and I can't decide if I liked it or hated it.
It was definitely creepy as well as psychologically disturbing. It had a mix of good acting and well written dialog, with a good dose of bad acting and B-movie dialog. It had its prerequisite of stupid people that deserve to die but surprisingly did a decent job of keeping one off balance as to what would happen.
I don't normally watch this type of movie, but I think once it started I don't remember either of us budging from the couch.
I can see many people really enjoying this movie, for myself perhaps it was a little to disturbing.

I get the feeling you have a thing for this movie, Mojo.

Stephen King novels adapted to the screen are hit and miss. Some, like The Shining, The Dead Zone and Misery were hits. All the others (the majority) in my opinion were misses (I've never seen Carrie so I can't comment on that one).

So I really expected nothing out of The Mist. And boy was I pleasantly surprised!

I am definitely a huge fan of human drama. To me, there is nothing uglier, more evil and sinister than man turning against man. After watching human drama, it comforts me to know that I will, in all probability, not face similar situations.

BTW, I watched an excellent show tonight called A Simple Plan. I highly recommend it.

I loved early Stephen King writing but when he started cranking out a book a month, he really lost his touch. I have heard his newest books are going back to his old ways but have yet to give him a fair second chance.

So far my friends' reviews have been a total of four out of four 'worst movie ever' comments. However, I like the very rare horror movie that chooses to go the psychological route vs. the hack and slash method so I'll probably rent it this weekend.

Warning, I am Legend SPOILER BELOW.

Speaking of "Human Drama" I meant to post this in the [I am Legend] conversation. I did discover one interesting and somewhat disturbing thing about our current human culture from that movie and that is how desensitized we have become to witnessing human death in movies and TV.

Not that there was a lot of human death in this movie (after all, he was the last man on earth through most of it) but I realized it when the Dog died. We probably see a dramatized human death every day if we watch TV and we don't even blink but when his loyal dog died, I had to fight back the tears.

Now, Yes, I am a dog lover but I'd like to think I value human lives more than canine lives. So why did this effect me so much?

Agreed. Most modern movies don't take the time to properly set-up psychological suspense. Most rely on creepy music with something jumping into the camera frame.

As for Stephen King--I've never been able to read one of his books. Maybe I should give 'em another go. I'm a huge fan of his non-horror movies--"Stand By Me," and "Shawshank Redemption." I haven't seen "The Green Mile," yet.

Probably because it had the right dramatic music and lighting to pull those heartstrings.

It's not a slasher so if that's what your friends were looking for, I can see why they were disappointed.

I like all those non-horror King movies as well. Very well done.
