If I understand this corectly, under NAFTA, any US or Mexican made goods for personal use (other than the restricted stuff, which audio equipment is not part of) is duty free.
So, in my search for the biggest bang for my Canadian buck of a receiver, can anyone recommend some " made in the good old USA" receivers ? I had my heart set on the ONKYO SR875, which is 2K in Ottawa, Ontario Canada but only $1100 in the states.. but that's not US made so I would pay full duties and all taxes etc..and I can't get it shipped to Canada, so it's Ogdensburg for pickup etc..
Maybe this is not a huge deal, I really don't know.. $900 cheaper, but after duties, brokerage fees, customs, credit card surchages or whatever else I don't know I'm going to pay..is it worth it ?
If I can get a $2K US Made receiver for $1100 duty free..that might be worth it ?
Just don't know what is American Made these days as all of it seems to come from Japan or China or other Asian manufacturer.
Thanks
Steph

I think NAFTA covers audio works, books and movies. I don't think it covers electronics.

Well according to the agreement any goods made in either the USA or Mexico are duty free..as long as they are not food, plants, animals, guns and a few other things.
It has to have either a " Made in the USA " sticker on it.. or.. an absence of " made anywhere else but USA " sticker.. so I could just remove the " Made in Japan " sticker..but that probably would not work out to well with the border guards..

I mentioned this on another thread but I'll reply anyway. Customs and Duties on electronics manufactured anywhere in the Far East is six and a half percent plus brokerage fees by the shipper(rip-off) which is usually a percentage of the value of the goods in Can. dollars. Of course there is the usual delivery charge and taxes.
It is important to note that if you buy any brand name electronics from the US that has a distributor in Canada generally the warranties are null and void and that is if they will even sell it to you begin with. I am not aware of any mainstream manufacturer that even exists in North America anymore nor has there been for some time. Even equipment like Outlaw and Emotiva, although engineered and designed in the US is still manufactured offshore. You can open up any piece of consumer electronics today regardless of price, and the parts are all from the Far East.

Klugger,
Just curious as to how much you paid for your Onkyo 875 in BC ? Here in Ottawa Ontario, the asking price is $2000. Hence why I am trying to figure out if it's worth the hassles to buy it in the US for $1100.

Casey01,
Thanks for the information, I did not consider the warranty aspects..My plan was to purchase it online and have it shipped (free shipping) to Ogsdenburg USA, which is 1.5 hours away from Ottawa CA. drive over, pick it up, come right back, declare a $1200CA receiver, pay all applicable taxes, duties, and other $$$$ and hope to come out ahead of the game by several hundred dollars..
That was my plan.. but if I get no warranty or support, that's not very good.
