finally got a dvd player that did 6 channel and "wires". everyone is out so i have laurence juber guitar noir semi cranked and it sounds fabulous (sp). called aix couple of days ago and ordered more of their stuff. if what's coming is recorded so exactly, i can't wait. thanks to all who explained the dvd players & 6 channel as opposed to just the optical cable. wife still cannot hear the difference; she loved it the way it was without the new "wires". but she has other attributes i'll not discuss tonight.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the DVD-A and AIX discs. The AIX offerings are really stellar, and the Juber sounds amazing on the Axioms. Lately, I've bought Silverline's Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band 'Swingin for the Fences' and 'XXL'. These are some great recordings with great music that rival AIX.

The digital cable is still better for HT, you should only use the 6 channel out/in for DVD audio or SACD. The Digital analog Converters are much better on your Yamaha Reciever than on your Mitsubishi DVD player. So you should send a digital signal to your reciever whenever possible.

Yes.
I may be mistaken, but I don't think DVD-V will output via the multichannel out. I think your only option is analog stereo, or digital out.

A DVD player with a built-in Dolby Digital and/or dts decoder will output via the multichannel out.

I guess it's the SACD players that don't. My player has a built-in decoder, but it won't send audio from DVD-V through the multichannel. Those jacks are reserved for SACD multichannel.
I think.

My question would be then why does it have a decoder? If it decodes a DD5.1 signal....where does it send the decoded information?

Wierd, I guess it has something to do with them being DSD circuits and not being PCM circuits like on a DVD-A player.

The Toshiba SD9200 DVD Audio player requires you to select "audio direct." The Sony STRDB 1070 processor section requires you to select SACD/CD for DVD Audio. The Onkyo TX DS 797 requires you to select "multichannel direct." Obviously, different manufacturers have different nomenclature, but unless your system automatically selects for DVD Audio, you have to coordinate analog direct bypassing DTS, Dolby and other digital decoding or processing. (except for some really high end units which avoid the digital/anlalog conversion which is a puke idea foisted by the music companies to protect them from you making a master quality copy of your favorite music.) Of course, the same limitation limits the fidelity of the music reproduction. Although DVD Audio and SACD sound terrific, they could sound much better.
Enjoy the Music. Trust your ears. Laugh at Folks Who Claim to Know it All.
