I’ve been following this thread over at AVS and though some might be interested. Originally started as a bashing session on the magazine review but the reviewer rebutted and has committed sacrilege by saying something good about an Axiom subwoofer over there. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17023573&highlight=axiom#post17023573 I felt comfortable saying the Axiom was my favorite, and that the SVS was the best value (that one was a no-brainer). But that's it.
dftkell, the Axiom is of a different configuration than the other subs - its driver and vent sit a couple of feet off the floor. Thus, it reacted differently with the acoustics of my room. The other subs delivered fairly flat response when they sat in my "subwoofer sweet spot." With the Axiom, because its drivers were higher, it didn't get as much benefit from the sweet spot. I could hear unevenness, particularly in the 30 to 50 Hz range. I ran an RTA sweep from my listening chair and it confirmed several unusual low-frequency bumps that weren't there in the close-miked response.
However, I'm more interested in the 50 to 80 Hz range, which is where you hear the articulation of the bass notes, and it's in that range that the Axiom really got me. I didn't see anything particularly unusual in the RTA results in this frequency range, so I don't think the different position was giving the Axiom a significant advantage in this range - I think most of it had to do with the Axiom's inherent sound quality.
I overlooked the problems in the lower range because they weren't the fault of the Axiom. I might have been able to find a better spot for it in my room, but then I'd have been listening to it in a different environment from the other subs. Even with the frequency response errors I heard, though, something about the sound really got me. It's like my all-time-favorite girlfriend, who was beautiful and fun but not particularly well-endowed.

Gad, it's like the audiophile public will slam anything that's a novel design. 2 tweeters?! Must be terrible! Big sub with the drivers not on the floor? Must be terrible!
Lord knows, if someone didn't invent by the 50s or 60s, it's gotta be terrible!

During my search for new speakers, I did notice that there was a disparity between the views of 'professional' reviewers and those who frequent the forums. Why is that?

The simplest answer is trolls. What you read on audio forums you have to take with a grain of salt. There is a lot of misinformation spread, for example a speaker will be bright if it uses a metal tweeter (the answer is not that simple). 3rd party reviews and measurements are a good way to bridge the gap between the trolls on the audio message boards and the biased opinions on the manufacturers website.

Thanks for the link Dean. You know, what the reviewer states is what I have found with my EP350 over time.
It seems with subs, like other speakers, its all about trade offs. In a single driver/single sub situation, the trade-off seems to be about top end vs. bottom end.
I have never had any issues with integration on the EP350 regardless of where I put it in the room. I suspect this has to do with how well the EP drivers handle that 50Hz and up range.

Not me, its the smart guys that design drivers and speakers like Mark Seaton and Earl Geddes who planted that bug in my ear. One of the coolest things about the internet is that it has forged a direct connection between designers and enthusiasts.
Guys like the two mentioned really love to talk about what they do and the internet has given them a lot of people to talk to. The incessantly curious like me benefit a lot!
