Hello all. I am a relative newbie to the HT world and I am planning on puchasing a system in the next couple of days.
My selections so far:
HK AVR525 Receiver
M60 Fronts
VP150 Center
QS4 surrounds
SVS or HSU sub (yet to finalize)
My main question is concerning the location of the the QS4s. The room size is 19.25' X 13.5'. The staircase and windows are located such that
A. I can place the QS4s at ear level and directly to the side of the main seating location
OR
B. I can place the QSRs 3' above ear level (as recommended by Dolby) but they will be 1.5' to the FRONT of the main seating position.
I am not sure about which is a better location or if either is acceptable. I can't really put the QS4s behind the seating position.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

Both of those positions should work well. Given those two choices, I'd mount them where they look best.

spiffnme,
Thanks for the prompt response. I remember reading somewhere that the surrounds have to be behind the listener. Are the QS4s in these locations acceptable because of their quadrapole construction or is this true for any surrounds in general? Just curious.
Also, I'd like to mount the QS4s flush against the wall. Are the supplied brackets adequate to do this or do I need to get something else?
Thanks for your inputs.

fiveptone,
Rule #1 of Home Theater: There are no "have tos". That's why it's fun and there are so many options.
The QS speakers, when used as surrounds (not rears) are designed to be mounted to the sides of the listener. Whether they are mounted exactly at the sides or little forward or backward of that makes little difference.
The included mounting hardware is ideal for flush mounting.

pmbuko,
Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to enjoying the the system. I've heard good things about this board and I am impressed at the quick response, that too on a Sunday!

yep...the QS series surrounds mount really well with the included hardware. Nice and solid - even with only anchor plugs and no stud.

i did not have permission to mount my 8's on the side walls, so mine are on the axiom stands in the rear corners. they sound great there too.

Hi,
The QS4s or QS8s are extremely accommodating to eccentric or asymmetrical placement. Even Dolby Labs says a range of 15 degrees forward of or to the rear of a horizontal line drawn across your listening area is quite acceptable. Nor do they need to be at identical heights or distances from the listeners. Try using a couple of stepladders to temporarily hold the QS surrounds while you listen.
