Hi Mel, Yes I did the sub crawl with my Energy 10" and the EP-500 is in the exact spot where the Energy was, which was determined to be the optimal spot in the room.

I am getting enough bass from the EP500, it's just that I was expecting to have a lower volume setting to reach the right amount of bass that's all. I do not have any " lack " of bass from the sub or overall.

Cheers,

As you've discovered the position of the knob means nothing. This is doubly true when comparing one model to another, let alone different makers.

Just turn the knob up or down until you have the right level on the meter. If you can't turn it up or down any farther, then you can adjust the trim in the receiver. Starting with the receiver at 0 is the best. Don't want to go too high, as the LFE channel is already pretty hot, and may end up clipping. Too low and if using a sub with auto-sense on it may not trigger at lower listening levels.

The voltage output from the receiver is going to be reduced if you are splitting that signal (using a Y adapter) for two subs instead of running it to one sub.

The EP500 has an input and an output. (see rear plate picture) You might get better performance by chaining the second sub off the output on the EP500.

That's true about the voltage reaching each device being lower, but the voltage produced by the output driver will be the same, so pushing it too far into the the + range could still cause clipping during some of the more intense low frequency effects, especially when combined with bass from the cross-overed speakers.

Additional: The output on Axiom's subs is just an internal Y. This can easily be proven by connecting the input to it. Since it is just another leg of the Y, it works exactly the same as the other jack. Performance will be the same.

With my Energy sub, I had it set at about 55% of max volume and in my pre/pro I dialed it down – 5 db (to get 80db on my SPL meter)otherwise, it was to much bass. With the EP500 on full volume, I did not perceive it as loud as the Energy at 55%. But after running an SPL check, it was clocking in at 80db, just did not sound like it was. So, I changed my pre / pro setting from – 5db to 0db and then set the ep500 to 70% of volume. That gave me the “umph” was I looking for.
There could be a multitude of reasons for this observation. Sub box tuning frequency, interaction of the sub with the mains, room response, etc.

At the end of the day, to have a flat frequency response is the goal. The only way to truly judge if there are frequency response dips and peaks would be to do a plot. Play around with Room Eq Wizard. I have found it to have a good balance between features and ease of use.

Last but not the least, have fun and enjoy your new EP-500.

Thanks all for your responses.. just to clarify my Anthem AVM20 has 2 dedicated sub out so I am not using a Y jack or anything like that. As for Room Equalizer, I did "try " to play around with it and the program is easy enough to use, I just never figured out what hardware and what connectivity to my PC I need to do to actualy record the test tones and do a plot of the room.. and I work in IT !!! I know.. Sad.. very sad..

I know some of you are experts at plotting rooms using REW and maybe one day, I'll ask in a post on exactly " how do you do that? "

Thanks again everyone.. I love this place, always sure to get some excellent feedback.

Cheers,

Riker
