Just finished watching “The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye.” Overall I’d say this is 4/5 stars or a B+ depending on your scale. It’s six disks each with four episodes which if you skip opening/closing credits and previews last a total of about 80 minutes/disk.

At first one might think this is just an anime version of “Tank Girl” but the main character is much more complex. While there is an underlying thread to the series it is made up of multiple story arcs based on missions with other story arcs based on characters superimposed on them. The result is a well told series of stories without any threads left dangling that I noticed.

While there is little original in the overall story, and the subplots and most characters are average, the main character upon which the entire show hinges is quite unique. Unlike many heroes/heroines she is multi-dimensional which allows her to overcome obstacles in unexpected ways. She’s one of those characters you just can’t help but like. Another plus, big plus based on a lot of things I’ve seen lately, is that none of the characters need behave stupidly to advance the plot in a particular direction.

However, all is not roses in this world. There is an annoying voiceover narration that keeps popping up pretty much just explaining the obvious or stating what could have been made obvious with a characters body language. Seldom does it give anything useful like back-story. Usually it just tells you what the characters are thinking/feeling which is obvious by from seeing their expressions. The only purpose this narrations served for me was to yank me out of the world and remind me I’m watch a show.

While not an epic or groundbreaking story it’s still a series well worth watching if for no other reason than the refreshing originality of the main character.

Dean, seriously, you need to moonlight as a movie critic...always a good read.

Thanks! It’s nice to know more than 2 other people read the “So what ‘anime’ are you watching tonight?” thread. ;\) I wish more people would post here though I do probably have a life that affords me a bit more “me” time to watch things than most.

Watched Gran Torino last night from one of the movie channels in HD. I really liked it, and thought that Eastwood did a great job as star and director. One of the best roles in recent memory. I give it a solid A and would consider it in my top twenty or thirty movies.

Watched the second Transformers movie a couple of nights ago on blu-ray. The ultimate popcorn movie, and I don't mean that as a compliment. Too much c/g FX, not enough else. The twins were awful - the Jar Jar Binks of this franchise. It was lame. I give it a D.

Gran Torino is an interesting movie. Overall it is a rather plain plot line and the ending was a little lame, but the interactions between the main character and his neighbours was brilliant. Him in the middle of the family get together was just priceless.

I agree with you on both counts. Unfortunately I watched “Gran Torino” at work (with the usual annoyances of a bunch of people trying to top each other’s commentary) thinking I probably wouldn’t care for it so it didn’t need the HT treatment. So I will certainly be watching it again.
