I heard from Joe at Axiom that they have been manufacturing QS4's with new tweeters. The new tweeter is not a hybrid, it is the same one they use in the QS8. My question is did Axiom increase the voice coil to 1" in the new QS4? Also, has anyone listened to the new QS 4, how does it compare to the older model?
Thanks,
fireline

Fire, if you understood Joe correctly, that's certainly good news for prospective QS4 buyers, but I note that the Axiom specs for the QS4 still show the hybrid tweeter. Possibly Alan or someone can clarify the situation.

Hello fireline and JohnK,
Yes, the titanium-dome tweeter with the 1-inch voice coil is now used in the QS4s, the same tweeter that is used in the QS8s and other Axiom speakers.
Ian Colquhoun, Axiom's president and designer, noted that the change was made "because the 1/2-inch voice-coil tweeter was only being used in the QS4 and that did not make sense from a manufacturing viewpoint. Sound and power handling are unchanged because the power capabilities are established by the woofer, not the tweeter. The new tweeter will not physically fit in the old cabinets so there is no possibility for changing them."

I'm confused.

Did I mis-read something?

I took it to mean that if you have the old qs4s, you can't swap in the new tweeter.

Hi oachalon,
It's been at least 6 weeks or more, but I'll check with my colleague at the Axiom plant and find out when the switch was made.

Well, this is interesting indeed as I just received a pair of QS4s this past Thursday. I'm going to assume that these have the new tweeters.
Alan - is there any way you can give us the starting serial number of the QS4s with the new tweeters?
Thanks in advance!!!

Tony, the bigger tweeter on other Axioms(and therefore the new one on the QS4 should be the same)is about 3 7/8" in outer diameter and has 4 supporting arms and screws on the diffuser in front of the dome, rather than 3 which the hybrid tweeter on the QS4 had.
