Hey guys,
Im a newbie to the forum and had a question,i only have the vp 150 right now and yesterday i hooked it up as my left channel speaker,well let me tell ya it sounded great!and it also looked awesome sitting on the stand vertically.i was planning on getting the set of m22ti's,but seeing how the vp150 is 400 watts,and the m22tis are 200 watts,it makes me wonder?I know their is a difference in price,but it could be worth it knowing the power handling capability.
And i was also wondering if their would be a sonic difference it being a "center channel speaker"that would not allow this to be a good choice for left and rights?
any comments on thi subject would be appeciated or even better if anyone has tried or ownes this setup.

I should mention that it's irrelevant that a speaker "is" 400 watts or 200 watts unless you happen to have an amp that can drive it to that degree.

As well, the VP-150 is 6-ohms vs. 8-ohms for most of Axioms other speakers, so you'd need a beefier receiver to drive it.

It'll probably sound fine, but my honest opinion is that's it dumb to use it for something other than what it was designed for. If you want bookshelves, get the M22s or M3s. If you want a center, use the VP-150.

But it's your dime.

I should think there would be dispersion and imaging issues that would be problematic. That is, I understand that Axiom designs the VP150 to be on its side and the M22 to be vertical. Switching them around is probably counter productive.

Ian and the rest of the design team at Axiom spent LOTS of time and LOTS of money developing the products. I'm sure if they thought that a vertical TMMMT array for mains was a breakthrough, we'd have a M232 or some such.

Likewise, the bass extension is problematic. The sealed enclosure of the VP150 does not allow it to go nearly as deep as the ported M22, even with a larger volume.

Plus, it would be ungodly expensive. If you're prepared to spend $700 on mains, just get a pair of M60's.

But really, I don't think such a setup would image worth a darn.

Well the reason i put up this post is because i have heard of people using bookshelf speakers for centers and really liked what they heard,and also magazine articles recommending bookshelfs for centers,because most bookshelf speakers have a better base response,and that can be a plus when it comes to dialoge.So visa versa it could work.

and yes saint,i have a hk 525 so i think this would drive them witout any problems,that was the whole idea having somthing that i could drive harder without distortion,and i always use my sub for my bottom end,so i really could care less about base output from my mains,so im getting high output of tower speakers and also saving room and money compared to lets say the m60s.dont take my word for it,try it,those vp150s crank!and it looks pretty cool to!

This is something new, over the months I read from this forum, I have heard people using M22 as center, hanging the M60 on the wall, and this is the first time I heard someone wanna use the VP150 as sides... Cool, soon... Before it ran out of combination, may I ask, will it be nice to use QS8 as fronts? and 2 VP150 as surround?

When I first joined Axiom and did a bunch of listening tests to all of the speakers, out of curiosity I put a single VP150 vertically on a stand and, like you, I was astonished at how good it sounded. I even mentioned this to Ian at Axiom (I think I said something like, "You know, they sound so good we could sell pairs of those for special applications. . .")

Of course, there might be imaging issues and I have not explored it further, but next time I'm at the plant, it might be interesting to do a blind comparison of a pair of VP150s used vertically with a pair of M60s!
