Hi people, I got several questions... First of my living entertainment room (not dedicated theatre) is 7000 cubic feet with 12 ft ceiling. I plan on using four QS8s. The trouble I am having is that I only have side walls! The closest back wall is actually the back wall to the kitchen since my living room is open and connect to the kitchen..[picture it as one big square with the back 1/3 of the square as the kitchen]. Should I place two QS8s, maybe two to three feet above ear level on each side....then place the back two on the 12ft ceiling and face them down???? Will it matter if the back two QS8s are at different height than side two qs8s...or should I just mount the back two qs8s in the back of the kitchen somewhere???

Hi gj,
Because of the multi-directional dispersion of the QS8s, they are very forgiving of asymmetrical placement, so no, it wouldn't matter if the rear QS8s were higher up and angled down slightly compared to the side QS8s.
You have a very large room, so I'd start with four QS8s, two on the side wall and two at the rear using the Axiom ceiling brackets. I think using four QS8s will provide you with excellent coverage and an immersive surround field. Some enthusiasts add an additional pair of side surround QS8s in large rooms.
The "angling down" also isn't critical with the QS8s either.
My own QS8s at the sides are not at the same height and in my experiments it made no difference in the creation of a deeply immersive soundfield.
You could also experiment if you like with the placement using a couple of stepladders to temporarily position the QS8s to see what, if any, effects there are with changing position.

I agree with Alan on the foregiveness. However, 12ft is pretty high up, so you might experiment on leaving them level or slightly angled. I found with my 9ft ceilings it sounded a bit better slightly angled downward.

maybe you could get creative and have a bracket hanging from the ceiling that lowers the Q's to a more matching position with the sides. I love DIY.

You're right, Sir Quack. I didn't notice the 12-ft ceiling, and I'd agree that at that height the QS8s may benefit from being angled down somewhat.
On the other hand, a reviewer who lives in a Brooklyn loft with very high ceilings once put the QS8s on the top of tall industrial mesh shelving and the surround field was wonderful. I was surprised they worked so well up high. They weren't angled or anything, just sitting on the mesh shelf.

Wow, room acoustics sure can act different from room to room. I hate it when my living room tv sounds quiet when watching it, but my wife is yelling down the hallway, turn that dang thing down.

If Randy's wife can cook a mean brisket, then you may be spot on.
