A couple of weeks ago, I went from a Denon 1803 to a 3803. The 3803 can drive 4 ohms, but that's not why I made the move. When I was looking to buy my Axioms, I checked my 1803 to see if it could drive 4 ohm M80s. Denon's documentation doesn't address this question very well, but the research I did indicated the 1803 might be iffy, at best. Since I opted for the M60s anyhow, I never needed to finish the pursuit.
Based on what I did find out about the 1803, I'd say the 1602 is not going to get you there. To be absolutely certain about this, you have some alternatives:
1) Maybe someone with a 1602 and 4 ohm speakers will answer here.
2) Look through the 1602 manual. If you don't have one, check the Denon site in their "Discontinued Products" archive. A manual will be available there.
3) Call Denon tech service and ask.
Wish I had a more conclusive answer, but it's a start.

Ray3,
I just did a little research
1) The denon manual says if you have speakers on impedence lower than 4ohms at very high volume for a long time, the circuit breaker might activate until the unit cools down.
2) it seems the M80's never drop below 4 ohms, and they look to be more of a 5 ohm speaker. check it out

Ravi,
Long time, no see. I'm not on the boards as much as I used to be, but caught your question.
Denon's FAQ addresses your question, and they say that their gear will run a 4-ohm load. They also state that if the load becomes too much, the protection circuitry will kick in as you've found.
Good luck with your testing.
