Don't the umps have their own review process and possible fines for bad calls?

I don't think their union would ever allow that.

Figured out how to navigate MLB.TV and watched the bottom of the 9th of the Blue Jays game.
I think the umps take exception when the player automatically assumes the walk and runs to first base before the call.
Bad call on strike 2 and I think the ump was just waiting for anything close on the next pitch to punch out Lawrie after he charged off to first thinking he had the walk.
Ugly all the way around.
And the thrown beer just made it worse.

That makes the ump look even worse if he can't remain completely objective.
I agree with that notion though. You see that with a lot of umps or it seems that way.

That's true. Those were really bad calls, but I cringe at Lawrie's reaction. His helmet slam is going to be the thing remembered.
Professional sports--the management of egos. Holds true for the officiating, as well.

I think he will get more games than Alomar who spit in the umps face. The umpires union will put pressure on Selig.

Unfortunately, that's what sticks in my head about Alomar despite how good he was as a player.
Ha ha, and then I remember all the other stuff about him. . . .and I don't feel so bad about not liking him.

Phew! 4 games.
Hopefully he appeals and can play against the Yanks tonight.

Hopefully he appeals and can play against the Yanks tonight. How many games would he have gotten if he just argued without removing his helmet? How many games if his helmet doesn't even come near the ump? Lawrie should be suspended for his actions, but the penalty should not be based on whether or not he intended for the helmet to come in contact with the ump.

Lawrie should be suspended for his actions, but the penalty should not be based on whether or not he intended for the helmet to come in contact with the ump. 1) Automatic ejection from game, no suspension. 2) Depends on the circumstance I suppose. In Lawries case he was charging aggressively towards, while violently smashing his helmet to the ground. One could argue putting the umpire in harms way. Intent doesn't matter here. I don't think the length of the suspension was solely based on the perspective of intent or lack there-of but it surely would play a factor in the final decision.
