You'd be sursprised what that's capable of.

Could you explain a bit more of what you mean by your message? In the 3801 specs, they say that when all channel are driven, it's 8ohms or 6ohms. Right now, I have some "rough" speakers wich are ElectroVoice T53+ wich are capable of a max SPL of 134db... I now want something that sounds better but that have a lot of power so the M80ti were the one I wanted but will I "fry" my receiver if I plug 4ohms M80ti on my Denon 3801? I want to be able to listen to 7 channels music loud enough...

Thank's!

Sylvain

In my opinion, your receiver will be able to handle the M80's. Another forum member is currently driving a pair with a Denon 1603(I think, maybe 1602or4). Anyways, unless you really want a new receiver for more power, video switching, or other "features," your currXWaxreceiver should do just fine driving your new M80's!

I have great news for you: that member is me

I'm running a 1602 with M80's (which are more like 5 ohm speakers - minimum 4 ohms).

Denon user manuals state that you CAN drive a 4 ohm load and it will only trip the circuit protection if you run them on Large for a long time at a loud volume. So I tried that with the M80's and they ran for three hours. Yeah, the unit was hot, but not THAT hot.

3801 will be more than capable.

Well, I'm wondering: Were you running the M80's in home theather or as stereo only? The Denon 3801 is capable of running 8, 6, 4 and even 2 ohms when it's run with two channels but they say 8 ohms or 6 ohms when in full HT.

Thank's,

Sylvain

at one point I had 3 pairs of M80's (yes thats 6 M80's) for h/T with my denon 4802 with-out any problems at all ....

doubt this is of any help, but when I had call denon about main speakers setups, I do remember them saying that most of there avr products (non avr products like Home Theater In A Box non included)are capable of handling the 4ohm load but do keep in mind with the combination of the surrounds this changes your ohm levels (in most cases this puts the level more near 6ohms) also the resistance on cables will also have an impact.

I've seen the M80's being powered by the Pioneer Elite line with no problems. According to a dealer I was speaking with, the M80's should be powered by almost any receivers. The only caution he gave was that if you're lacking in power, you may get a little distortion. In which case you wouldn't want to play them too loud (or hours of continuous play) to avoid damaging the M80's.

I'm sure there are guys here that can clarify this who have far more knowledge than myself.

Denon is saying that there receiver works fine when you are in stereo but recommend 8 ohms speakers when you are listening to music in 7.1 stereo or listening to a movie in 7.1. Should I be worried about that?

Also, what do you think of putting M80's as surround compared to the QS8 ? The QS8 envelop you as surround speakers, would the M80's do the same?

Hi Sylvain,

No--at least not in most rooms. The M80s are direct-radiating speakers; the QS8s radiate in four different directions, so they deliver a rich mix of reflected sound, yet retain a surprising amount of directional acuity for effects or music "hard-mixed" to a particular surround/rear channel.

In really huge rooms (8,000 cu. ft or larger) which have lots of reflective qualities--cathedral ceilings, lots of glass, and the like--the M80s might produce as enveloping a soundfield as QS8s, although I really doubt it.
