lampshade, the first thing that came to my mind when i read your post is: this guy needs Muzak, it's a professional soporific and it has proven itself for dozens of years in all kinds of environments.
Bose would be superb for that, as muzak does not have low frequencies that we can hear.

Nor any other frequencies that we would want to hear.

And in the interest of being more helpful:
What about nature sounds, self-meditation relaxation discs, or simple white noise boxes?

I second John's recommendation for classical music at night to unwind. I often listen to classical (a favorite is Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik)or jazz before retiring for the night.

I have a really nice gentle thunderstorm cd with peeping frogs. But I wanted to try something new.

if you get Galaxie on satellite or cable, try the "nature" channel; the play nature sounds often accompanied by soft music.

. . . with peeping frogs. But I wanted to try something new. I wouldn't be able to relax like that. Not with them staring at me the entire time.

You wouldn't like my house, then. If you go out after dusk, you're liable to trip over a peeping frog.
