Hi all looking for a few suggestions regarding outdoor speakers. I recently completed (well almost) my covered patio and now need to fill this wonderful space with some sounds. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with outdoor speakes. . . and could provide me with some suggestions.

I remember about a year ago that Axiom was talking about outdoor speakers but I never heard anything else on this. Do any of you guys know if it is still in the works?

thx

No word yet on whether or not Axiom has even begun to develop outdoor speakers. My advice is don't wait around for them.

Well, NHT makes an outdoor speaker. I've never heard them, etc, etc, but I do know that some people like NHT a lot. Even if they don't have real wood veneers...

Hi kjs,

No outdoor model in the works that I've heard of (and I'd know if there were. . ).

I've heard very few outdoor models, but you might look at a couple of our Canadian competitors who have outdoor models (Paradigm, PSB).

Another option, since your patio is covered, is to simply use a good conventional speaker like a favorite Axiom. The diaphragms of the woofers and tweeters are aluminum and titanium (or some type of polypropylene on other brands), so they are fairly impervious to weather.

The reason I suggest this is the experience of an old friend of mine in Toronto who was the founder of Mirage. He put a pair of medium-size veneered Mirage 2-way bookshelf speakers on his back veranda (they sounded pretty good) for a big outdoor party, and then left them there--- for years!

Toronto winters are fairly brutal and although the veneer peeled, and they looked terrible from the ravages of snow and rain, they continued to sound fine. If memory serves, the woofers on the old Mirages were a doped paper, which is far less resistant to damage than aluminum or polyproylene.

So you could consider using a pair of Axioms that you like. They'll likely last for many years.

And if you wish to protect the veneer on them, you could always buy a pair of these to put on them.

I use these
NORTHRIDGE E SERIES – N26AWII

while I doubt that they sound the best, they relatively affordable and sound pretty good IMHO. I use them when we go out to the hot tub or have BBQ's ect. They work great and I left them out all winter this year, and they still look relatively new.

I got some discontinued Advents on ebay pretty cheap...about $60 per pair...They're no Axioms, but they sound acceptable for listening while in the hot tub.
