I have a 120 gig Ipod. It basically staying in my truck, hooked up to the truck's system. It has been acting flaky as of late. It is constantly shutting down and / or re-booting. I think it may be dying. I had no idea that Apple has decided to discontinue the Ipod classic. I do not want a Touch. Amazon has some 160 gig classics, but damn they want a lot of money for them.
Before I just buy a different MP3 player, I figured it would be wise to find out if you all have had any luck with a particular player or if there are any that I should avoid.

Does your truck's head unit have a USB input? Maybe you could just replace the iPod with bulk storage or something and use the head unit's UI to access the content.
Do you really need 120GB of content with you?

I had my iPod classic in my Edge and found that it was doing some funky things turning on randomly and dropping out when playing.
Then it dawned on me. It's winter time and it's been getting down to the -30 that is pretty damn cold. The unit just could not hold any charge on the battery and was simply frozen.
I pulled it out of the car and brought it into the house for the winter time. Now it's warmed up again, the unit is working just fine. I however think that I am going to move over to a 32gb USB thumb drive. Heck, I could even go down to a 8gb as I found that putting all my music onto a single drive never really did much good, You'd never drive far enough in one go to listen to the whole thing. (well over 30 days of continuous music) The head end unit would max out at about 8,000 songs anyways. But I found I listened to probably 2000 songs I really liked. better to put in a $15 USB

Yes, the truck has USB with Ipod control via the touch screen.
I have not tried a USB stick or hard drive. I should though. Good idea.
Matt, it does it no matter what the temp is. Where I live, a five hour, one way drive is pretty common to get to the city. I make that drive about every four weeks.

The true side to consider is how good a sound quality you can stand? Like, myself inside the car cannot tell the difference between an MP3 recorded at 128 and one at 320. The speakers inside the car are not that good and to be honest, I just want something that is background distraction noise to the drive, as I am paying more attention to the road and what I am doing.
At 128kb/s you can get about 15 hours of music per gig. So even getting one of those $50 ipod touch, you would have around 60 hours of music. I know like most of us, we tend to desire the best, but reality is that we could put up with much lower and not even notice it.
I went to Walmart and got my wife an ipod mini so she has something to listen to on the train into work. that was $145

I have plugged an ipod into my car once...too much work when I can just plug in a 64gb usb drive and have more music than you can listen to in a week available.
You also have no worries about theft of the ipod....just a thought

I use a small 32GB USB drive also. No fuss, no muss, no controlling two different devices in my case.

So when you use a USB stick, how do you organize the files on the stick? And what about play lists? Can you sort the music by genre?

I copy the files over in a folder structure, Band Name\Album\songs - the same way iTunes stores them on my HDD
I never bother with playlists - either here or on my iEnabled music devices - as my drives are typically 32-128 GB, so there is plenty of music to choose from. I hit the random button if I want to listen to various selections.
