I am looking at upgrading my TV to a projection system. I will have to create a bracket for the screen to extend it out away from the wall. What is the recommended distance the M100 needs to be from the rear wall and the screen itself?

The rule of thumb is 4ft gets your SBIR null to below 80hz so you can handle the loss with your subs. Almost impossible unless you can go with a screen wall setup.
Practically, if you can maintain where you like them from your wall now you should have similar results.
Note:
An acoustically transparent screen will roll off the high end above 10k considerably. This may be desirable in an untreated room.
Any ports near the screen may cause it to billow during loud passages. I would say 6" clearance is minimum, but if no front ports are present a few is good.
In-wall speakers are great to minimise space required for an AT screen setup.
