Coors Light will do that to anyone, regardless of what state you're in.

Hey Din, I'm a H/K 630 owner. I've had this happen once. Not the fan, but the sudden shut off. I have no idea what happened. It's like it rebooted itself. This was months ago. I haven't had it happen since. I sometimes run my setup all the way to reference level (0), but average around -25 to -15. Funny you mention the fan because I haven't had the fan turn on once...I actually said to myself the other day "I thought this thing had a fan?".

At -40 I can't imagine it tripping all of that. So there must be something up. Let us know how the power strip works out for you. One other thing to make sure is that your receiver has ventilation. It'll need to use that fan if there isn't enough clearance for heat to "rise" and clear itself through the vents on the receiver.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Around these parts (New Mexico) Texans already got a bad name. He He He. ;-)

Just kiddin with ya Big John. Settle down there old feller.

My HK-630 is in a room that's pretty hot this time of year. I'd say it averages around 80+ degrees F. at times. I never had the fan kick in yet.

It does seem to have a bit of a hard time locking in on the Dolby Digital signal at times. The HK goes through this wierd auto detect sequence where it searches the analog and digital lines. Is there a way to switch this to manual? Once it locks in it is solid. But the search/detect feature can be a bit annoying.

It's sounds like what you're talking about is one of it's natural "quirks". There's about a two second delay after it detects a new signal. For instance when you watch a DVD, most menus are in 2.0 Dolby, but when you select and start the movie it switches to 5.1 Dolby Digital, in that transition there's a delay...a mute if you will, then it finds the signal and stays on it fine after that.

Din, a surge protector should have nothing directly to do with what you're experiencing and just plugging directly into the wall socket is fine. Examine your wiring to see if possibly a strand has come loose and is shorting out the receiver. Even if you don't see anything wrong, disconnect and carefully re-connect your wires.

Well, the new surge protector did nothing. Recently the receiver was actually turning off every few minutes.

So, I checked all of my wiring (I recently put banana plugs on so that was quick and easy). I started to change the setup back to the way it was when it was working properly. I removed a new speaker, still didn't work. I removed a new DVD player, still didn't work.

So, finally re-read the advice in this thread and came to JohnK's response. I unplugged my receiver from the Surge protector and plugged it straight to the wall.

There have been no problems since. Everything is working perfectly.

Well I spoke too soon.

The unit now just shut's off all the time after about 1-2 minutes.

I have unplugged everything from the receiver, except the power cord and it still shuts off in 1-2 minutes.

I tried the "reset" feature this receiver has, but too no avail.

Oh Well, I guess it is off to the shop. Have any other Canadians had any issues getting warranty work done (in Canada) on items purchased from the US?

I had similar problems with a refurbished HK AVR 125. It turned out to be an internal grounding problem. After a couple of trips to my local authorized HK repair shop. HK deemed it a lemon and sent me an AVR 130. Good luck-sorry to hear you have to go to the shop-I know the feeling and feel your pain.

Well, I have hooked up my old KenWood (really old) and it sounds okay for the interim. The only problem is, now i have 12 guage wire running in the room with banana plugs. This old receiver won't handle banana's, or 12 guage wire.

Oh woe is me. Hopefully the HK will be an easy fix.
