Hey guys,
I'm a newb to this hifi stuff and i wanted to get some imput regarding what you all think I should do. I am purchasing new Dali Suite 1.7 speakers along with Dali's 0.7 Surround set and a TruAudio CS-10 Sub. I'm stuck between getting a Denon 3805, maybe a Denon 2805 and a Integra DTR-8.3. The only caveat is that I can get the DTR-8.3 for $1,000. I'm interested to hear what would you all reccomend based on this information?

Thanks....

-Ed

can you get the 2805 for less than $1000?? the integra is just a jazzed up version of an onkyo.. now, i own an onkyo, but they really jack up the price of the integra, when it is basically an onkyo. plus, those designs arent made to push 4ohm loads, so if you have 4ohm speakers, i would look else where..

instead of the integra, you can get the onkyo 701 or 801 for around $500-$600 bucks. no need to spend that extra money. or, go with the denons, those are good to, and you can find some great deals online..

I can get the Denon 2805 for about $600 and the Denon 3805 for about $900, just to show the pricing I'm looking for. I am bit confused about the ohms part of it. All I know is I will have a 5.1 setup with Dali Suite 1.7 speakers plus the surround set and sub. I keep getting conflicing advice regarding what I should be looking in a reciever. Everyone keeps telling me that the Integra DTR-8.3 is supposed to be the be all with better hardware, but is it worth the price difference? BigJohn, you obviously seem to believe that it is not worth the price difference, any other opinions...?

i checked your dali suite speaks, and they are 8ohm, so no worries there..

i am not saying integra is bad equip.. it is just a little over-priced.. its the same as onkyo, and you can get onkyo products with the same power and features, for much less. i own the onkyo 701, and am very happy with it.

after looking at the specs on then integra DTR- 8.3, i think the best onkyp equivelent would be the 801, and if you want a little more power, the 901. they all have the same decoding capabilities, the netcard feature, and 7.1. so unless you just wanna spend the extra money, give a look at the 801 or 901.. i think you will find them to be very similar.

BigJohn,
You raise a really good point. Let me ask you this, how would you compare the Denon 3805/2805 to the Onkyo 801/901?

to be honest, i have never heard the new denons yet. the 3805/2805 is a newer version of the 2803 i believe.. anyway.. i have heard the 2803, and it works great. it is a real good receiver, with all the decoding and extra bells and whistles that an upper end receiver is supposed to have. i never did an actual A/B comparison, but i would say EACH receiver from either company will serve you very well..

to figure out what would be the best receiver for you, you need to go to the respective websites, and pull down the specs for each receiver. then, using the specs, make a determination as to which reciver will do what you want it to do, for the best price. example--do you want 5.1 or 7.1..? do you plan on hooking the receiver up to your computer? if so, then the onkyo netcards feature will work great for you.. how many watts per channel do you want?? anything from about 90 or higher will be fine. how many digital inputs/outputs will you need? do you want the capability to add an additional amp at a later date? will you want to set up a dual zone system? etc, etc..

analyze the capabilities of each receiver, and see which will be best for your needs. all of them have the bells and whistles.. all of them are well made.. all of them are good quality.. there are a lot of people around here that LOVE denon.. and thats fine, its a good product.. i just think one can find highly comparible equip at a better price.

and i would NOT spend $1000 for the integra. it might have tons of extras, but what good are they if you arent gonna use them?

well said bigJ...thanks for the input, you have been very helpful. I'm sure I will have a few more questions. Let me do a litte more research and perhaps get back with some of my findings.

Thanks again and I'll be in touch...

The 3805 has video upconversion and (if I'm not mistaken) 3 component inputs. If you are going to have much video going through this receiver it is hard to top. I like my Harman Kardon AVR 230 a lot (great power, sound, easy to work with) but if I had it to do over again I would get the Denon 3805.
