First and foremost these are speakers that sound fantastic, I had high expectations, and they have exceeded them! I just love listening to these speakers. I got them Friday afternoon, and with this rainy weekend I have enjoyed many hours of great music, and a couple of flicks, have just rocked the house.
I don't like how flimsy the grill cover is. I thought it was a little flimsy on the 22's and the 150 center I have, good on the QS-8s. But with the large dimensions of the 60s, and I assume the 80s, the covers kinda warps a bit. and as you put them into the the cabinet they gap abit instead of a flat consistant mesh. I just think the grill frame needs to be a little beefier. Speakers are above all meant to sound good, and the excell in that. I mean these speakers are awesome. My neighbor has some Polk RTI-70s, They sound decent, but by his own admission, no contest to the Axiom 60s. These speakers are awesome.

I think the grills are a little flimsy too. I love the sound quality and I think the speakers are top notch other than the grills. I don’t remove the grills often so it isn’t a big deal.

I hardly take the grills off of mine also, but yeah, they are a little flimsy. I don't consider that an issue though.

We are not talking about a major issue here. Grills are grills. From what I have read they do not make the least bit of dif in your speakers output. So, wrack it up to Axiom cutting a corner. I would much rather they cost cut in the grill catagory then in something that really matters...

I remember Alan saying something about this... Something like there's a 1, 2, or 3 db difference in sound but no change in linearity on or off axis. Can't find the post.
Meaning, basically according to Axiom's tests there is NO difference.
On a side note I find the grill on the EP500 sufficiently rigid enough and fit snug against the cabinet. It must be the dimensions of the M60 that makes the difference
Cheers, Jag

I agree with what lomb7 said.
Jag: Is the grill frame on the EP500 plastic like on the M60's grills?

Yes MiniRock, they are plastic and the fabric appears as though it has been heat bonded to the plastic frame. I expect they are made similarily to Axioms other grills ( looks like it to me on the product pages) but haven't recieved my other speakers yet so I can't say for certain.
Cheers, Jag

EXACTLY, I was not saying it was major, I am also not opposed to improvement of a product or at least constructive critiism. That's the WORST thing I could find in the M-60's that's actully a compliment to the wonderful sound of the speakers. Just being as honest as I could. I think I already explained my thoughts on the priority of sound, in which I could not be happier. We agree (I think) on this subject. Jon

Alan's reply in this thread probably is what you were referring to. I prefer my Axioms nude.

Thanks JohnK, that's the one. Didn't have it quite right, but close enough...
I'd definitely agree, a naked EP500 has huge sex appeal!
Thanks for finding the post, Jag

Yeah, unfortunately not usually to the people in our lives who we would WANT them to have sex appeal to...
If that's not clear, I apologize. I'm not particularly coherent right now.

JoninFlorida,
I'm glad you like your M60s. We're not cutting corners on the grille. The smaller the grille frame, the fewer diffraction and interference effects there will be. That's why the midrange and high frequencies on the M60s and other Axiom models are essentially unchanged with or without the grille.
If you introduce a heavy-duty grille frame, you risk hi-frequency cancellation and reinforcement that may become audible and measurable with the grille on.
Regards

Man, it's almost like they thought about everything when they built these things
Almost like they engineered them...
