No joke. If you can make it to TiVo headquarters in Alviso, California tomorrow between 11am and 1pm, with your Comcast cable bill and a gift for The Family Giving Tree charity, then you get a free TiVo!*

* while supplies last, one per family, existing customers not eligible

Here's the official story. (link fixed -- thanks Ken)

Are they trying to get people to use Tivo instead of whatever Comcast is coming out with? I don't know why else they would be giving out free stuff to Comcast customers, unless they worked out a deal with Comcast.

Yup. Comcast has their own non-TiVo DVR in the works. TiVo is "encouraging" Comcast customers to go with their existing product instead.

Pretty sneaky.

That's awesome marketing. Charity work, good publicity, AND grabbing customers away from their competition. Genius.

I'm assuming you just get the Tivo for free, but still have to pay the monthly charge to use it. They aren't including the lifetime (of the device) membership, correct?

Great marketing, IMHO. Yes, Tivo's kinda losing steam, but way to pick up on Comcast's stumble.

I'm sure Hwy 237 will be a mess today.

My mother-in-law is actually getting her Comcast DVR installed after waiting about a year. I told her about the fiasco that Comcast started and I think Comcast didn't want to piss off more customers so they're moving double time. I'm sure it's not as nice as the Tivo interface, but then again, she doesn't have to rewire her house to support 5 receivers w/ a multiswitch and dish.
