I know I've seen this topic before but I just can't find it. I appreciate your help.

How far apart should I set my front surrounds? I sit about 10' back from a 55" 4:3 rptv. I have space to set them as wide or as close as I need to.

I have M22's on the 16" stands.

In general, it's good to place your front speakers so that your seating position and the speaker locations form an equilateral triagle. In other words, the distance between the speakers and the distance from each speaker to you should be equal. Start there, and then tweak the positioning to where it sounds best. Also, be sure to try angling the speakers inward by varying degrees so they point toward your seat.

Peter's got it, but this calculation doesn't need to be slavishly followed.

Generally speaking, the further that you can separate your front speakers, the wider your soundstage will be and the sound will often have more clarity. Of course, this is within reason. There is a point that you can have your speakers TOO far apart. Then a "gap" in the center might appear (or it might appear in between your fronts and your center).

Don't forget about room reflections and corners that accentuate bass, etc. Try the equilateral triangle method, and then move them in or out depending on what sounds best to you. The important thing to remember is that there are no set in stone rules. Trust your ears, they'll tell you what's right or not.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I meant the front left and right speakers, just as you supposed. I guess I'll play with my distances. I was googling images of home theaters... either inspiring or depressing depending on how you look at it... but pretty fun. I noticed lots of speakers were placed right next to the tv. Mine are about 3 1/2' to each side.
