Well, I have taken to reading the posts early in the morning with my coffee, and got all caught up in the DVD Player thread this morning, and Ray got me all wired up about this Denon 2900.
I had vaguely been thinking that this would be my next upgrade, but had not really gotten started investigating heavily.
So where do I find myself today?
Browsing the Outlet racks at Crutchfeild, looking to see if there is a cheap reciever for my Mom and her husband.
What do I come across?
A Denon 2900 marked down from $700 to $495 to $349.
The tag said "Missing a Part"
I've bought tons of great stuff out of their Outlet section, and asked the sales guy to run the numbers. (they can plug in the unit's code and see what the gig is)
It was a display unit in the store, never plugged in, missing the box and the power chord.
He fished into another box and got me a chord.
Full Two Year Warranty, the whole gig.
Thanks Ray!
If I had not seen your reviews on this player this morning - And then followed your links and done some more searching on the web before I left the house - I would have passed this by and not even known what I had missed!
***Single DVD of your choice ON ME! PM Me with your selection and address and I will have it on the way!***
Now all I have to do is smuggle it into the house while the sweetie is at work, drag out the entertainment shelf system (Geeezzz! I just did that LAST weekend cleaning up all of the cables and routing everything better!) and get it installed without stealing another whole day from my Sweetheart!
Hey!
Now that I think of it, What are you doing on Saturday?
Anyway,
Thanks!
(and I'm serious about the DVD!)

Are you telling us you got a 2900 for around $400? I think I hate you!. WOW! Such a deal. Curtis is gonna hate you too. He just paid $529 for his.

So, did he grab you an E power chord or an F power chord? Perhaps an F#?
Sorry to pick on you. I'm just jealous.

Oh man!!! What a deal!!! Too bad they didn't have that listed on their website.
Been playing with my 2900 a little this evening. Ray did not lie....I am happy. Some quirks with some of the burned DVDs I have...but liveable.

Yup! $364.70 w/ Tax to be exact.
Only trouble is that now I am going to have a pretty darn hard time ignoring my desperate need for that Yamaha 2500, or something similar, to upgrade to SACD & DVD-A capability.
Shame Crutchfeild does not sell Yamaha anymore. I might have found one of those for $500! ;-)

TjB - what a great story! You are gonna really love the thing.
I also bought mine from the Crutchfield Outlet store, but it was $629. However, I also had a $500 recognition award/gift certificate from work AND sold my Denon 1600 for $150. By the time I was done, I got the 2900 essentially for free, with enough left for a decent bottle of wine. Feels like I stole something.
Curtis - don't feel too bad, you still got a great deal and will enjoy it for quite some time to come!
BTW - I saw your comments on a Yammy 2500. Have you considered the Denon 3805? Outstanding unit and ecost should have them soon for (est.) around $650 as refurb gear. I'm guessing the Christmas returns are being repaired as I type this and should be distributed soon.
Thanks for the offer of the DVD, but you can make better use of that money by taking your wife out to dinner and broaching the subject of a new receiver. Or you can apply it to a set of analog cables for Blue Jeans Cables for enjoying DVD-A and SACD music.
Anyhow - great deal and congratulations TjB. Enjoy it!

Ray,
Regarding your comments about ecost. I am in the market for a new receiver and check the ecost site daily looking for a deal on a Denon. Their stock appears to be very limited at the moment. Personally, I know very little about these online retailer's and was curious how their stock/supply operates. I really don't need a new receiver today and was wondering if I should just wait for newer models?
Cheers,
Shaun

i would think if you dont really need a new one right away, then just chill til the new models come out. once that happens, you can find the older models(which are still great) for a lot cheaper.
perfect example.. the new onkyo receiver series cmae out about 4-5 months ago. the 502/602/702/802/902...so now, you can find the older models 501/601/701/801/901, for super cheap. i have seen the 701 on the net for as low as $419.. man, that is super cheap for new in box, non-refurb.
just look around for deals, you can find them.. also try dakmart, for denon stuff.

Hi Shaun,
It appears that ecost, macmall, pcmall and dakmart all draw from the same supply (warehouse) of Denon refurb equipment. Denon ships/makes available whatever they have in a quantity that makes sense. Said another way, you rarely see single units. Whne Denon has 5-10-15 of something, they make them available. At least that's the way it appears to me.
With that in mind, the approach of "checking back every day" is a good one. No other way to predict when gear will be available. When you see something you want place your order via phone and aks if they actually HAVE the unit. If there is a little yellow sun showing, they likely have it. You also want to follow up on your order. If they run out or they are waiting to get equipment, they sometimes cancel the order without letting you know.
ecost is the best of the bunch from both a price and Customer Care perspective. I normally agree with bigjohn (there is always that hope of chili in his back yard!), but Dakmart is to be avoided - their performance and reputation is abysmal. I and 4 of my friends have bought from ecost and been very pleased, as have several folks on the forum here.. It clearly saves you some cash.
Understand that the refurb gear comes with a 90 day warranty, but you can purchase extended time very reasonably.
I'm not sure what you are looking for, but there should be equipment showing up soon that has been received, used and returned to Denon from Christmas.
Denon's model numbering scheme also supports boutique/professional sales and is a bit confusing. For example, the 3803 and the 1083 are the same units, as are the 2803 and 983. The front page of the manual also shows "3803/1083", so keep your eyes open.
If you know the model you want, watch for it. Then grab it when it shows up. The equipment doesn't last long.
Good luck with it.

Thanks BigJohn:
I think that I will take your advice and chill for a while.
That damn 'upgradeitis' bug hits periodically!
I'll probably end up buying the best bang for your buck receiver rather than purchasing a Denon exclusively.
Onkyo, HK and Yamaha all appear to be great products so I'll just get over the fact that my M60's need a Denon (or maybe they do?)!
Cheers,
Shaun
