This really isn't a review yet, as I'm just starting to experiment. I dusted off my 80's Pioneer CS60 4-Way loudspeakers and placed them next to my M80's. The problem is that my 80's are hooked up to my Odyssey monoblock amps which are hooked to the Denon PreOuts. I've got my CS60's hooked up to the B channel from the front L/R on the Denon.

At this point the only way I can listen to just the CS60's is by unhooking the RCA cables from the back of Denon. I don't see a way to do this on the remote. I could hook the m80's back up to the A channel on the receiver I suppose and then go back/forth for comparison. Or, figure out some type of speaker selector?

At this point the Pioneers sound very very good. At first I was like, WoW, these sound as good as my m80's, could this be possible? I'll post the specs later on the CS60's when I find the manual. Off the top of my head, they have a 12-15" "Turbo" Woofer, 5" Midrange, Ribbon Tweeter, and also a Dome Tweeter with freq res. upto 40,000khz. I think they are rated at 150Watts max or something like that...

I was so suprised by the detail and fullness of my old buddies, I forgot about how nice of a lowww end they gave with the larger woofer.

So, any ideas on a cheap way to come up with a selector? I suppose Radio Shack or someone else would have such a item, looking for an inexpensive option.

This would also be nice if people every bring their speakers over for comparison...

Later, off to work I go...

40,000Khz is very high indeed!
Unless you meant 40,000Hz or 40KHz... ;\)
Looking forward to your full report!

Mojo bought a simple 4 way speaker selector for our speaker comparisons, but I have been looking at something like this which will allow for volume correction due to sensitivity differences.

That sounds promising. It is always delicate to compare speakers that have different sensitivity.

I could tell a difference when I switched from the 8ohm pioneers to the 4ohm 80's, the volume was very different.

Looking forward to your comparison as well. Kind of nice to bring the old school stuff out just for fun. You know pics and specs are a must. ;\) Have fun reliving the old days and enjoying all the new.

With something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Pro-Series-2-Way...%3A1|240%3A1318

you could just output the monoblocks to it, then output from the a/b box to your 2 sets of speakers. That way, they both get the amplification.

OK, first some clarification, my memory is not as good as it used to be, once I dug them out I realized they are CS-605s. \:\)

Here are some pics

Please disregard the orbs, as most of you know my place is haunted.

My like new 80s Pioneer CS-605s

Bring it on M80s....

Hey, those woofers look to be the same size.

And finally, my lonely EP600 in time out.

Great pics! I LOVE vintage audio. I ran a set of dbPlus 990's for over 20 years (bought new in '87)!!! I only replaced them with my Axiom's about 3 months ago when my stereo system's priority shifted from 2 channel music listening to 5.1 movie listening. That's why I'm the 80'sMan!!! ;\)

Hardly wait for the results of your comparison.

What are the odds of the Pioneers' woofer surrounds holding together for this endeaver? ;\) My '78 vintage Precision Accoustics 10 inchers pretty much turned to dust around '97 or so.

Glad to hear the foam surround has apparently not disappeared after all these years. Those big old 12 inch woofers sure can move some air. I would guess the M80's are nice and tight in the bass area though.

I had a pair of Pioneer CS922A's coupled with a Pioneer SX-1080 receiver back in my old Army days, the speakers wore out a long time ago and I got rid of the receiver at a garage sale for like $25 ... wish I would have kept that receiver.

Cool stuff Randy.

So, Mr. Quack, any chance to compare the 2 sets of boxes yet?

I had the Pioneer's hooked up to the B channel of my Denon for a couple of days prior to my last audition.

Without the purchase of an AB selector it was a little difficult to transparently switch back/forth as the levels were off due to the ohm difference.

Anyway, I was very impressed with my old Pioneers. Personally, I thought the detail was right up there with the m80's. Also, they may have had a bit more in the bass category compared to the 80's with no sub on, due to the 15" turbo woofers. Throwing the sub in the equation it was a toss up. I had more overall bass presence with the 605's because of the additional air movement of the 2 extra 12" woofers added to my 3 subs.

I also played around a little with small/large settings on the receiver to pump out more bass to the loudspeakers and they handled it well with no strain.

Honestly, I was very impressed with the sound I was hearing, maybe I should sell my 80's. Just kidding. \:\) I can say I won't be selling my old Pioneers anytime soon, just what to do with them?

I do have an old JVC pro logic receiver I could use it for 2 channel music listening with my 605's..

I think you should dig out the old receiver and keep those old pioneers live and kicking. Glad to hear they still stand up to new technology. Wish I had kept some of my old speakers for comparisons.
