All too often we get stuck thinking that things have to go paralell to walls or flat up against the wall. Looking at the picture of the apartment it looks like you made very good use of limited space by putting things at angles. You might think in this way at the new place. Take some graph paper and scale the room out. Make scale graph paper cutouts of you furnishings and move them around on paper. You'd be surprised of some of things you are willing to try when you are not actually moving furniture. It really help visualizing the possibilities.
