D-VHS offers 1080i playback, and there is a not-too-terrible collection of software available, albeit at 50-60 Cdn per tape.
It's a pretty safe bet that even when it becomes available, HD-DVD is going to go the way of the laserdisc...strictly the realm of hard-core enthusiasts. Standard DVD has just grown too big, too fast. Considering the cash-cow DVD is now (and in fairness, how much studios are putting into reissuing old movies on DVD), there's really no incentive for the studios to go HD...at least not with older movies.
