As you've discovered the position of the knob means nothing. This is doubly true when comparing one model to another, let alone different makers.

Just turn the knob up or down until you have the right level on the meter. If you can't turn it up or down any farther, then you can adjust the trim in the receiver. Starting with the receiver at 0 is the best. Don't want to go too high, as the LFE channel is already pretty hot, and may end up clipping. Too low and if using a sub with auto-sense on it may not trigger at lower listening levels.
