I would definitely take gems' advice and use a disk like the Avia or the Sound and Vision HT tuneup. I believe both can be found at Amazon.com
Tune your receiver up to 80Hz for the cutoff and use the pink noise (speaker calibration level) setup supplied by your receiver. I'm assuming here you have a relatively new a/v receiver with such an option (you never mentioned what hardware you had). Most often each channel is no more than +/- 1 or 2dB unless the speaker is located further away than the others.

Short of doing all that, you might be a candidate for tower speakers otherwise. They would fill in the larger sound you feel you are missing at the present time.
