I wouldn't worry much about the kids. There's been tons of parents/kids combos on the forums over the years and frankly reports of any debilitating damage have been very rare.
In fact, i can't actually remember any at the moment.
I do recall someone's kid putting toy cars in the back ports and the occasional dust cover push in (easily fixed using tape to pull it back out).

We've had two kids plus dogs and many years back a cat, not one of our 6 speaker sets has ever been damaged. Both the kids knew how to use the electronics at age 3-4 and were always taught to be careful around them.
