If I had to guess, it blew a capacitor....something you can replace yourself if you're handy with a soldering iron.

A studio flash blew a capacitor on-location in a clients' antique studio during a photoshoot once. It output white smoke, smelled horrible, and it "peed" on his carpet! smile

If you opened up the cabinet and saw signs of a liquid in there, I'd feel even more confident that it was just a cap.
