Hey my parents just got an Epic Grand Master 500 system in the mail and I am going to start installing everything for them this weekend. The room they are going in really is an acoustic nightmare, around 20'x20'x25' with hardwood floors and tons of windows. It is pretty sparse furniture wise too. Still fighting with them to at least and a large area rug...lol.

Anyway because of the entry way into the room everything is off center. The TV and furniture are all along the right side of the room (looking from the door towards the back of the room). So if I mount the QS8s on the side walls as should be in 5.1 setups, the right speaker (still looking at back wall) will be in the perfect spot. Between 3-8' depending on where you are sitting on the couch or love seat. However the left side speaker is really far off because of how everything is oriented on the right side of the room. So that QS8 will wind up being anywhere from 10-15' away from the listening position.

So the question is should I just mount them directly behind the couch and love seat on the back wall? I just don't want to kill the back surround with those m60's firing towards them. Thanks for any suggestions!

You should be able to adjust the speaker levels enough to counter the speaker distance differences, but the best way would be to try them out in each position first and go with which ever sounds the best. You can use ladders as speaker stands to gain the elevation and set the QS's on soup cans or hockey pucks to keep them off the bottom woofer.

Hockey Pucks?!?

You ARE from Canada!
hmmm.. I don't think a football would have the same effect.

yes, and soup cans can be placed under the edges of the QS8's so that the bottom woofer can still work with some breathing room.

Chunky soup is preferred.

Mike, unless the couch is almost up against the back wall(which I doubt because of the length of the room)and the QS8 on the back wall wouldn't be much farther back than the one on the side wall, place it on the distant side wall and calibrate its level and distance settings higher to compensate for the difference in distance.

A football no, but a football tee would work great and if you are really good at balancing things you could try baseballs.

Well if I do place them on the backwall both speakers will only be 4' away from the back of the couch. I am just worried because of the distance of that left QS8 it will kill the back surround effects. Will raising the volume of that speaker really make up for the distances involved? Its not like we are talking 2-3ft here.

I would set them up on ladders but it would me a major PITA, because I would have to test it out before I run the wires through the walls and it would be wasting alot of the wiring (well I could maybe reuse some it for the fronts). Copper isnt cheap these days...lol.

Mike, if the back of the couch is only about 4' from the wall, then mounting both QS8s on the back wall should give good results even though they're side, not back, surrounds. Separate the QS8 that's closer to the side wall as much as possible(say 6" from the side wall)and the other one a similar distance to the opposite side of the couch.
