Greetings, Programs!

I’m hoping to upgrade my 3.1 setup this fall, and have been trying to decide which speakers would be the best bang for my dollar.

Currently, I’m running two M3’s, a VP100, and an EP175. My AVR is a Denon AVR-3808CI. Just bought the TV stand seen in the photo, and will be bringing up my turntable that’s currently in the home theatre.

I’ve been toying with the idea of going with a VP150 and a couple of M5HP’s. The VP150 should improve the centre channel for normal TV viewing, and the M5HP’s might be nice for listening to LP’s with the addition of their midrange driver.

Any thoughts?

Keep in mind, my home theatre is a 7.1 setup with a couple M60’s, and VP160, 4 QS8’s and an EP500, so that’s where I watch anything loud and explosive.

Any chance of raising the TV a bit and fitting a third M5 underneath? I'm not certain you'd gain much over the VP100 using the VP150.

I’d like to avoid moving the TV up any higher—it’ll move out of the ideal viewing height of the viewers’s eyes at 1/3rd from the bottom of the frame.

Hi Bayne,
I'd have to agree with Adrian on your not getting much improvement from the VP150 over the 100. If you like the idea of the M5HPs as your left and right mains, perhaps you should use one of your M3s as a center channel. It's far more neutral than the VP100 or the 150, and should blend smoothly with the M5s. Note that I've never heard the M5s, but I expect they are excellent. And you already know what a great natural-sounding center channel can sound like, since you already own the VP160.
Note also that during my years working for Axiom, I never liked the VP100, and the VP150 was what I'd call "adequate" at best. I always encouraged Ian to develop a no-compromise center channel, which the VP160 and VP180 certainly are.

Regards,
Alan

This weekend I’ll play around and see if I can get any more height for the TV—but my wife is being a bit stubborn about going higher. I fully understand what Adrian and Alan are saying, and would love to get my hands on a VP160 Mini as the full-size one in the home theatre is like a warm hug compared to the sound of the VP100.

Or 2xM22 and a single M2 for center to minimize the amount of rise needed for your TV. That was my previous setup which sounded great. I now run 3xM5 for LCR which is also great but makes for a tall center channel! Are you thinking of changing sub as well?

PS - Love the Tron reference!

I’ll be keeping the sub. It adds the perfect amount of bass for this room as is and was added just about 2 years ago.

I considered the M22’s, but like my M60’s so much that the thought of going without midrange drivers somewhere in there seems wrong.

I have a similar tv stand and i welded some extension on to the brackets and raised it up a couple extra inches. Honestly you wont notice it i am sure, though i do have recliners so it works out fine. The 180 is only 9.5 inches high and imho thats the one i
would get though it is a bit long. They need one like the 180 but smaller imho. Bear in mind that the 180 slopes back more than the 160 which will give you a bit more room. I ended up building my own, speaker placement is a bit unconventional but it works excellent.

M5s and a VP180 center would be an awesome combo...maybe more $$ than you want to put into a "Secondary System" though.
