Received my Epic60 500 set up last week. The last addition to my upgrade will not be here for a couple more days ( NAD T163 & T973)until then i am running them with my tired Harman Kardon AVR500. I cant wait to get some real power to these speakers. I hope I'm not over looking something obviuus but i cannot get the EP500 to work. It will power up just fine but it has not made a sound. The junior Sunfire I have been using uses two inputs, Harman one out. keep in mind i am not as confident in my HT knowledge as most of you are. Turned the EP500 around with RCAs in hand......ok, digital coax no problem. Tried the coax in the only places it could go on the AVR500, still nothing. In the speaker size menu in the receiver the sub is turned on. channel adjustments sub is up. Junior S.F. works fine. Is this one of those "If it were a snake" things? Dont know if this means anything but I was moving the ep500 to a different location and i could hear somthing inside the cabnit hitting (not hard) the side of the box. If i rock the sub (NOT HARD) side to side i can hear it everytime. Is this just some wires or cables that run across that area inside the sub? Any suggestions?

Maybe they left the power cord inside the box

Here's a list of things to think about; I imagine you have already tried most :

1. If you plug the Sunfire in does it work ?

2. Assuming 1 isn't easy, can you try setting the mains to Small to ensure that LF is going to the sub no matter what content you are playing ?

3. Sometimes the signal from the amp isn't enough to trigger the sub's auto-on/off logic... try raising the sub level a bit in the control panel or just crank the volume control up.

4. Do you hear any "hum" when you plug in the RCA cable ?

5. Where is the sub gain/level set ? Turning it up 1/4 turn from "all the way down" is usually right.

I don't like that rattle. Are there any other signs of shipping damage ?

Ash, just getting the EP500 started doesn't have some tricky step, so I wonder if the noise that you hear indicates a loose internal connection. I did note that you said that you put the coax into the "places", plural. Are you sure that you put it into the one line level input(the second one down)? The fact that your Sunfire works fine indicates that your receiver and player settings are okay. As a check, you might disconnect one main and run the speaker wire to one of the high level input pairs to see if that connection works.

No subwoofer currently available to my knowledge uses digital coax. While it's fine to use that cable, you should definitely NOT be hooking the sub up to a digital Coax output on your receiver! Your receiver should have an LFE or Sub output that you should be connecting to.

Good point. You definitely want the "pre out" subwoofer jack, not the other one (6 channel in).

The EP500 and the other Axiom subs, make no rocking sounds when you move them side to side. I had and EP350 and I have now an EP500 and nothing should be loose inside, and I have lifted them quite a couple of times changing positions in the room. Call the Axioms for advice in getting the cover open and check for loose conexions.

From what I understand of your post, it sounds more like a configuration / setup problem (assuming the rattle in the EP500 is nothing harmful of course). Try to set the all your speakers to SMALL in the receiver and enable the sub output. In the AVR500 manual it says that, as with other many receivers, if the speakers are set to LARGE the no sound will be sent to the sub, only the low frequency of the channels with speakers set in SMALL... try using the STEREO mode first - its easier to get confussed with 5 channels sending bass to the sub - , with bypass x-over in the sub, and SMALL setting for the front speakers (As I understand in the manual your AVR500 only x-over @ 100Hz)

Also, check the volume knob of the EP500, and turn it more than 1/4. More close to 1/2... and let me know if an sound came out (provided your Junior Sunfire is working) Just unplud the RCA from the Junior and plug it into the EP500. If no sound comes out of the EP500, in the bypass x-over setting, FULL trim setting and more than 1/2 half volume, then the rattle will be more meaningful that we expected.

If you are getting the NAD T163, you must be getting the V2 upgraded version (that comes with PLIIx and no HDCD decoding). With that you can select the speakers to LARGE and the sub simultaneously.

My Outlaw came with a loose speaker connector. Same thing, no sound...

Seeing how I can't leave anything alone, I tore into it and found that the connector was a tad on the loose side. A little squeeze with my Kliens and all was good.

You may have something similar going on.
