Your colleague is a wise man when he suggests going with Bolshoi or Kirov for the Russian ballets. Yes, I specifically suggest the linked Bolshoi performance which is from a live 1989 performance(with much enthusiastic applause). More technical details are shown here . Applying DPLII to the stereo sound nicely spreads some ambience to the surrounds.

Now for the Nutcracker it's the Kirov's turn in a performance at the Mariinsky Theater.
