The mix & match you describe sounds good - I was also thinking that the RC-7 might be a better choice than the VP150.

Believe it or not, the VP180 came first and the VP160 was added later because people were asking for that driver layout. If you think the VP160 as a big step up from VP100 it makes more sense. I would argue that the VP160 is actually a more conventional layout than the VP180.

Horizontal speakers with multiple midranges & tweeters get flak because of concerns about comb filtering, but at least with the VP180 the driver arrangement and distances manage to make it pretty much a non-issue. I spent some time trying to model the comb-filtering I would get from the 180 and was pretty impressed with the driver placement by the time I finished.
