I had thought that if I get the Samsung DLP as planned (or equivelant), I would build something like the above. (Sorry for the crude illustration. The monitor, stand and speaker are "pulled apart" for illustrative purposes;the shelf for the center would just "hover" an inch or so above the TV).
I would really be placed "behind" the TV so that basically you would just see a shelf "floating" above the top of the TV's cabinet. The VP150 I have is really a bit too big to fit on a shelf under the TV in many of the TV stands I've seen, in particular the Bell'O one that matches my audio rack.
I've also wondered about doing it in steel as I know a welder that loves doing artsy, furniture stuff like this.
