Peter, I was about to suggest the Sony A3000 50" before I even saw your question about the rptv's.

I see you said your max budget is $1000?!?!?! is this right?

I have the sony a2000 50" and the picture is phenomenal! RPTVs are said to deliver some of the best pictures around. The nice thing about the a3000 is the super slim bezel which should allow for getting the tv in your space. I would highly recommend checking one of these out:
