As you, no doubt, have seen, in the last couple of years, in order to still get the variety and number of connections you require, AVR manufacturers are essentially forcing the consumer to purchase their mid to high-end models while pretty well eliminating everything but the basics from the least expensive lines. The Denon design you refer to is a perfect example of that. Pre-outs were the first to go, then the other stuff.
