For overall picture quality, black levels which leads to better colours and off-axis viewing, even today, plasmas are still superior. The smallest plasma you can buy, however, is 42 inches. I would recommend though, that if you decide to go the LED route, choose the back lit design not the edge lit. The edge lit has too much variation in picture brightness, especially showing up during a dark scene in any movie or video that you are watching. In any instance, if you are intending on getting a professional calibration, it will be worth it.

Some of the higher end models of any design, nowadays, have more extensive grayscale and some limited colour management systems built right in so the user, if they were keen, could go out and buy a meter and some software and after a little learning curve do it themselves. The only drawback to this is a professional calibrator would have the advantage of having access to the service menu to be able to make more precise adjustments.
